Program Description

The Education Specialist degree with a major in Educational Technology and Learning Engineering is a 30-credit hour lockstep, postgraduate doctoral level program. The landscape of P-12 education is complex and rapidly changing, posing opportunities and challenges to what it means to be an effective teacher and successful student learner. This program is designed to equip educational leaders to tackle these promising and challenging frontiers of education-innovating education technology, leveraging the science of learning, and developing powerful pedagogies to improve learning outcomes in P-12 online educational environments. Undergirded with a foundation in the theories of learning and teaching and real-world experiences in the confluence of instructional design, educational technology, and learning engineering, candidates will graduate with a dynamic professional learning network (PLN) that showcases the depth and breadth of their design work and demonstrates their capabilities as leaders in learner-centered engineering, design, and innovation. This program is aligned to the recommended requirements of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation's (CAEP) advanced-level program standards, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) for Educators standards, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE-SA) for Industry Consortium on Learning Engineering. This program can provide entry into the Ed.D.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, candidates will be able to:

  • Apply a biblical world view and ethic to teaching and learning, research, technologies, instructional design, assessment strategies, and course development for P-12 online environments. 

  • Analyze current research, theories, methodologies, practices, and standards for online teaching and learning.

  • Evaluate appropriate technologies and tools for optimal student learning and engagement in online environments. 

  • Design authentic learning experiences and assessments using the instructional design process. 

  • Demonstrate effective online systematic instructional design. 

  • Apply how learning theories and technologies can be applied to engineer and implement innovative and effective online learning designs and experiences. 

  • Examine critical issues and trends in educational technology and learning engineering and how they impact the P-12 online learning environment. 

  • Research leadership initiatives that disrupt, challenge, and advance the design, implementation, and sustainability of innovative learning environments. 

  • Develop Investigative skills for advanced learning applications for P-12 learning environments. 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of an empathetic student-centered learning environment that supports learners’ individual differences, creates consistency, decreases cognitive load, increases working memory, and builds community.

Admissions Requirements for this Program

  • A graduate degree from a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) verified on original transcripts sent by the institution directly to Indiana Wesleyan University. Transcripts from foreign institutions may need to be sent to an outside agency for evaluation and determination of transferable credits, degrees, and GPA. If this outside review is necessary, students are responsible for the initiation of this evaluation and for any fees incurred during the process.

  • A graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher from the graduate degree granting institution at which at least a minimum of 30 hours was completed.

  • Supporting documentation demonstrating access to a P-16 or adult education classroom.

  • Experience in an education environment.

Graduation Requirements for this Program

  • Successfully complete the program curriculum.

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in all graduate work and a minimum grade of "B-" in each course.

  • Payment of all tuition and fees is required to receive a diploma.
