Program Description

The Master of Arts degree with a major in Sports Leadership will provide graduates with the fundamental knowledge of leadership theory and skills to practice leadership in the global sports management industry. Students will engage in an interdisciplinary core of leadership courses with peers from other types of organizations, including business, nonprofit, government, military, and ministry to provide a rich context for the practice of leadership. Students will also engage a specific sports leadership curriculum that will build upon practical application of current professional engagement while it prepares students for a variety of sport-related occupations including fitness clubs, wellness organizations, and professional or intercollegiate sports teams.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Synthesize historical and contemporary leadership theories with knowledge of sports industry operations to guide the effective practice of organizational leadership.

  • Synthesize faith, the curriculum, and the practical application of the current professional engagement as part of a character-based and ethical practice of organizational leadership within the sports industry.

  • Analyze the sources and consequences of organizational problems, as well as appropriate interventions, to help the organization achieve its goals.

  • Evaluate the change and learning needs of an organization to implement a strategic plan and redirect an organization toward its goals.

  • Evaluate the competencies required of leaders to lead effectively in the contemporary multicultural and global contexts.

Admissions Requirements for this Program

  • A baccalaureate degree from a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

  • A minimum GPA of 2.5 in all undergraduate work.

Graduation Requirements for this Program

  • All 30 credits required in the curriculum sequence with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum grade of "C" in each course. A grade of "C-" or below will require the course to be repeated.

  • Overall GPA of 3.0 in all IWU graduate work.

  • Payment of all tuition and fees is required to receive a diploma.
